Chess in the post-World War I period emerged vigorously with important tournaments, individual matches, and the growth in chess stature of a number of players.

Tournaments were back in the 1920's. The last major tournament before World War I was the St. Petersburg 1914 event. In the decade of the 1920's, over 50 strong chess tournaments can be identified (Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_strong_chess_tournaments).
World Championship matches were held.
Notably, too: On July 20, 1924, FIDE was founded in Paris, France. Its motto is Gens una sumus, Latin for "We are one Family" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIDE).
