Chess from 1930-1939 featured a full range of professional chess activities.

The World Chess Championship was played by Alekhine and Bogoljubov twice and by Alekhine and Euwe—twice! Important tournaments were won by significant players, and a number of ‘Notable Games of Chess’ emerged throughout the decade (See: https://www.chess.com/blog/SamCopeland/the-top-10-chess-games-of-the-1930s-and-80-honorable-mentions; and https://www.chessgames.com/perl/goat.pl?decade=1930).

Younger chess players were becoming more well-known. Death came to older, important players. Yet new players—including World Champions—were also being born!

The decade ended in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II. It occurred just after the Preliminaries of the Buenos Aires Olympiad. Participants fled to their homes, or stayed in South America, while some became Prisoners of War. As the world moved into a new phase with another World War, disruptions to “chess life” loomed.

But we can be grateful for the enrichments that came to the history of chess during this period. As Sam Copeland puts it in his survey mentioned above: ‘There was much great chess to enjoy in the 1930s prior to the coming universal cataclysm that was World War II.’

I hope you enjoy recalling some facets of this “yeasty” decade!

I trust this Crossword was enjoyable as you consider 1930-1939.
