Chess Openings and Defenses

With apologies to the Book of Genesis: "In the beginning..."

In chess "beginnings," we have the Openings.

We have "Openings" and then "Defenses" as part of the overall "Opening" phase of a chess game.

Many books have been written about chess openings and defenses. Over time, openings and defenses have settled into recognizable moves and patterns.

This Crossword presents some of these opening moves, asking for the name of the Opening or Defense the moves signify.

A word of warning: Some of these may be "little-used" or "obscure" move patterns. These have garnered a name, over time; even though they may not be in vogue or useful for today's players. But they do point us beyond our own "knowledge" to those who have gone before. They have created Openings and Defenses--even when we are not aware of them or use them today. It's all part of the "great march of chess" history!

I have no expertise in Openings and Defenses. I have taken these moves and names from http://www.chess-poster.com/english/openings/chess_openings.htm.

I hope you enjoyed contemplating Chess Openings and Defenses!
