Efim Bogoljubow
Efin Bugoljubow (1889-1952; Bogoljubov) was 'one of the world's best six players in the 1920s' [David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld, The Oxford Companion to Chess, rpt. (New York: Oxford University Press, 1987), 41].
'Bogo' or 'Bogol' (as he was called) had a huge personality which was reflected in his play. He is known for, as Fine put it, producing 'atrociously poor games as well as sparkling gems; his play was generally uneven. At his best, though, he was a dangerous opponent' [Reuben Fine, The World's Great Chess Games (rpt. 2012), 163]. Or, as Reti more graphically put it, Bogoljubow 'overruns all his opponents when he is in the proper frame of mind' [Masters of the Chess Board. 21st Century Edition (Russell Enterprises, 2012), 174].
This Crossword gives a small flavor of the player whom his contemporary, Reti, further called: 'among the leading masters of the present day, but also among the greatest masters in the history of chess' (174).
I hope you enjoyed 'Bogo'!
