Emanuel Lasker
Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) was the longest officially recognized reigning World Champion of Chess (1894-1921). He was one of the chess greats, a theoretician and attacker and defender. He could adjust his style in relation to his opponent.
Through his five decades chess career (1880’s-1930’s), Lasker excelled both in matches and in tournaments. In the 1893 New York tournament, his score was 13-0. It has been calculated that from 1889-1940 in almost six-hundred games, Lasker scored almost 74 percent. His losing games were about one-tenth, while his number of wins is almost twice as large as his number of draws. The Linders write: “This amounts to the highest percentage among all the strongest players who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries” (Isaak and Vladimir Linder, Emanuel Lasker: 2nd World Chess Champion (Milford, CT: Russell Enterprises, 2010), 156.
