
Hastings 1922
The town of Hastings in England has been the site of many, many chess tournaments and games!
Hastings 1895 is 'considered one of the greatest tournaments in the history of chess. It was one of the first tournaments to include all the top players' (Wikipedia). The Hastings 1919 'Victory Tournament' was the first international tournament held in an allied country after World War I. The annual Hastings International Chess Congress and its Premier tournament which takes place every year around the turn of the year has been a major tournament since it began in 1920/21. Its draw has been such that 'every World Champion before Garry Kasparov except Bobby Fischer played at Hastings' (Wikipedia). Hastings is 'the world's oldest running traditional tournament' (Reg Cload with Game Selection by Raymond Keene, Battles of Hastings: A History of the Hastings International Chess Congress [New York: Pergamon Chess, 1991), x.
Hastings 1922 was a separate tournament, arranged by the municipality for September 1922. This was a double-round invitation event for six players. Two were English masters: Sir George Thomas and F.D. Yates. The others were four top players from the European continent: Alekhine, Bogoljubow, Rubinstein, and Tarrasch. The tournament's outcome was not decided until the final round. Alekhine won the event.
