Women Chess Grandmasters
In 1950, FIDE officially established the Grandmaster (GM) title. In that year, it awarded the title to 27 of the past and present top players in the world who were still alive. None of these were women.
Vera Menchik, who had played against high-level male players and was the only Women's World Champion prior to 1950, was not considered since she had been killed in World War II.
In 1978, the first woman was awarded the FIDE title of GM. Currently, there are 39 women who have attained the GM title. Yet, "as the overall number of grandmasters has increased from about 300 in 1990 to over 1700 by 2020, women still make up no more than a few percent of the total" (Wikipedia).
