Here White keeps it flexible with e3 and d3. Since White keeps the KB diagonal open, then it is logical for Black to play ..c6 to have that bishop to bite on granite. Since there is no pressure on the Black e5-pawn, Black can break with ..d5, which is the case in the main line.
