Early Life
Garry Kasparov was born to a Russian Jewish father and an Armenian mother. He showed exceptional talent for chess from an early age. At age 10, he began studying at the famous Botvinnik Chess School in Moscow. He rose quickly through the Soviet chess system.

 
Rise to the Top
In 1980, Kasparov became the World Junior Chess Champion.
In 1984, he challenged reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov, beginning one of the most famous rivalries in chess history.
In 1985, at the age of 22, Kasparov became the youngest World Chess Champion in history.

Kasparov defended his title successfully five times, including four epic matches against Karpov.
