Mikhail Tal was the 8th World Chess Champion and is widely regarded as one of the most creative and fearless attacking players in the history of chess. Known as the "Magician from Riga," Tal dazzled the chess world with his imaginative combinations and bold sacrifices.

Tal became a Grandmaster in 1957 and won the World Chess Championship in 1960 by defeating Mikhail Botvinnik, becoming the youngest world champion at that time (age 23). His reign was short-lived, as he lost the title back to Botvinnik in a rematch in 1961.

Despite health problems throughout his life—including severe kidney issues—Tal continued to compete at the highest level for decades. He was a multiple-time Soviet Champion and a beloved figure in the chess community, both for his brilliance on the board and his warm personality off it.

Tal was also a prolific writer and journalist, known for his witty and insightful commentary on chess. His games are still studied today for their boldness, beauty, and depth.
