American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, one of the world’s strongest bullet chess players, has tragically passed away at the age of 29.

The news was confirmed on October 20 by the Charlotte Chess Center, where Naroditsky worked.

“The Naroditsky family shares the heartbreaking news of Daniel’s sudden passing. He was a talented player, a dedicated teacher, and a beloved member of the chess community,” the statement read. “The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) also expressed its condolences:

“Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky was a gifted player, commentator, and an inspiring figure. FIDE joins the global chess community in mourning this tremendous loss.”
Born in 1995 in San Mateo, California, Naroditsky began playing chess at the age of six under the guidance of his father. In 2007, he won the World Under-12 Championship, becoming one of the brightest young talents in American chess. Six years later, at 18, he earned the Grandmaster title.

Throughout his career, Naroditsky defeated several top players, including Fabiano Caruana, then world No. 2 with a rating over 2800, at the 2021 U.S. Championship. In 2025, he won the U.S. Blitz Championship with a perfect score of 14/14. As of October 2025, his ratings were 2619 (standard), 2636 (rapid), and 2705 (blitz).

World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura once described Naroditsky as one of the top four players in the ultra-bullet (1+0) format — alongside Magnus Carlsen, Nakamura, and Alireza Firouzja. In this time control, each side has only one minute to complete the game, with no increment per move.

Naroditsky was also an accomplished author, having written several highly regarded books such as Mastering Positional Chess and Mastering Complex Endgames. He contributed regularly to major publications, including The New York Times, as a chess columnist.

Beyond the board, Naroditsky became one of the most influential chess educators and streamers online. His YouTube and Twitch channels attracted hundreds of thousands of followers, praised for their insightful and approachable lessons. His humble, humorous, and clear teaching style made him a symbol of the post-pandemic online chess boom.

On social media, fans and fellow grandmasters expressed shock and sadness. GM Oleksandr Bortnyk, one of Naroditsky’s close friends, confirmed the tragic news during a live stream.

“It’s hard to believe. He was kind, dedicated, and inspired countless people. The chess world lost a true teacher today,” the site Attacking Chess commented.
The cause of death has not been disclosed. Both FIDE and Naroditsky’s family have urged the public to avoid speculation and instead honor his contributions to the chess world.

Naroditsky studied history at Stanford University and lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was widely regarded as an ambassador for chess, bringing the game closer to new generations around the world.
