Results of my New Meditation
For information about my experiment, please refer to my first post.
Last week I tried a more chess-orientated meditation in addition to my normal one. It was very difficult. I was mentally weaker for a full week afterwards. It certainly affected the games I played during the week and my chess club session. I suspect the extra tiredness is due to the meditation having a significant visualization component. So, an additional section of the brain got worn out. I decided it was worth trying again. I decided to rehearse a line of the open Ruy Lopez and I managed to meditate this way for 9 minutes. I then meditated my normal way for 10 minutes and then for an additional 1 minute after a 5 second break.
I have 2 data points for the question I posted to the forum last week. The question was 'How long in duration are you able to maintain a state of deep focus while calculating before your mind starts to wander?' An IM (FIDE rated: 2438) said he can go for about 30 minutes. A retired CM (FIDE rated: 2193) said he can go for about 5 minutes. The results are interesting but unfortunately there are not enough data points to be significant.
My results at the chess club were fairly even. I played 2 strong people (1950 and 2050). My results were 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses. My 2 losses were because of silly tactics and were clearly a result of some mental sloppiness. My draw against the 2050 was well played. The win against the 1950 was on time. The final position was very complicated. It was probably objectively winning but I probably would have lost the position if we had kept playing due to his position being much easier to play from a practical perspective.
