When Tactics Aren't Enough: Lessons from an Endgame Collapse

I'm a tactical player — my puzzle rating is 3900, and I usually find my way through sharp positions. But in a recent 10-minute game, I learned the hard way that tactics alone can't win games.

I gained an early advantage with 14.Nxb7! and strong queenside activity.

Then I blundered: 25.Qc1? followed by 26.Ra5?? allowed Qxa5, and the game slipped away.

Key Lessons

1. Don't Simplify Without a Reason – Endgames need clear plans, not assumptions.

2. Keep Rooks Active – I misplaced mine and paid the price.

3. Endgames Require Focus – Tactics fade, but technique matters more.

Final Thought

This loss was painful but necessary. It reminded me that flashy tactics don’t replace calm, precise endgame play. I’ll be ready next time.

Chess rewards patience as much as brilliance.
