GM Bobby Fischer was the 11th official world champion as well as the first and only American world champion. He is considered by many to be the most famous chess player ever.

Fischer is especially famous because he was an American champion during the Cold War, over four decades in which chess was dominated by the Soviets. His title-winning match against Boris Spassky was hyped as the “Match of the Century”.

Many chess fans consider Bobby Fischer to be the best chess player ever. In 1970 he won 20 consecutive matches in “1970 Interzonal”. He became World Chess Champion in 1972 after beating Boris Spassky in a match in Reykjavik.

Robert James Fischer was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. A chess prodigy, at age 14 he won the 1958 U.S. Championship. In 1964, he won the same tournament with a perfect score
