A Warning About the Comet Browser

The Offer

On October 2, 2025, Chess.com announced a promotional program: Download Perplexity AI's Comet browser, and get access to all the "good" premium features from Oct. 2, 2025 to Nov. 1, 2025. At the surface, the offer seemed perfectly harmless, a product of capitalist society- business partnerships. And Chess.com wasn't the first to partner. The LA Times offers access to subscription-only features for free when you download, and Discord ran promotions as well. Surely there couldn't be anything wrong if all this big companies have announced partnerships?

Well, no.

The Warning

If you have taken advantage of one or more of these offers, there's an important consideration. The offer is perfectly legitimate, and you did indeed get access to the premium features. However, the Comet AI browser has had a history  of data insecurity.

Its AI has been known run codes that "CometJack" your private information, via a malicious prompt hidden inside URLs on the browser, and numerous holes have been found where attackers can easily obtain your information. In addition, in an independent test, it was found remarkably easy to trick Comet's AI into leaking user data. In fact, real-life hackers have hijacked the AI to steal real data with ease. Even worse, hackers can find all of your information, purely by taking control of the AI (which has been proven to be quite easy). The AI has also shown to have been able to download malicious code as well, through "backdoors" in its program.

And the AI knows pretty much everything. It tracks your search history, activity, location and purchases, enough for a malicious actor to create a detailed profile on you.

Reconsideration

If you've still got the Comet Browser installed, and now that the Chess.com offer is over, will you continue to run it at the risk of your data safety, possibly pick up some LA Times reading as well, or do you prefer to play it safe and wait for another collaboration with a more secure browser?
