Friend of God,

This letter is on purity. The past couple weeks, I've been pondering what exactly it means to be pure and clean before the Lord. This study has helped me and I hope it will give you a better understanding of purity as well. The Lord has commanded us in His word to be pure and wash our hands of sin. That means to seek strength from the Lord to become sanctified and resist the temptations of sin. It is an ongoing struggle that every Christian has to fight.

Pure means containing only one, unmixed with any other matter, free from dust or dirt and untainted. The word pure occurs 102 times in 97 verses in the NKJVThe word clean occurs 114 times in 99 verses in the NKJV. In Greek, pure means clear, chaste, clean, chosen, bright and purged.

The next verses are on purity. They show how God commands us to strive to be pure and clean. To be pure, we have to cleanse ourselves (with God's help), from the things that we have made more important than God. We have to put away our idols and resist the temptation to fall back into them. We need God's Holy Spirit in us in order to be able to stick to our resolutions. Studying God's Word every day helps us to know what He says about different everyday issues in life as well as it gives us knowledge to defend the gospel. What can be more embarrasing then to be a Bible believing Christian, but not be able to explain why you believe what you believe or why your religion is the ONLY way when the Catholics, Mormons etc... say the same thing? How is yours any different? These are some real questions that people ask. I encourage you to study up on how to answer them. We can always learn. :P

Job 4:17

Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?

Job 15:14

What is man, that he could be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

Psalm 24:4

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.

Proverbs 21:8

The way of a guilty man is perverse; but as for the pure, his work is right.

1 Timothy 1:5

Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

1 Timothy 5:22

...nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.

Titus 1:15

To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.

James 1:27

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

1 John 3:2-4

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Leviticus 7:19

The flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned with fire. And as for the clean flesh, all who are clean may eat of it.

Leviticus 11:32

Anything on which any of them falls, when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is any item of wood or clothing or skin or sack, whatever item it is, in which any work is done, it must be put in water. And it shall be unclean until evening; then it shall be clean.

These verses are on the word clean. They tell us what God promises to those who strive to be cleansed from sin with God's help.

Job 17:9

Yet the righteous will hold to his way, and he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger.

Job 9:30 If I wash myself with snow water and cleanse my hands with soap.

Isaiah 1:16

Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil.

Job 17:9

Yet the righteous will hold to his way, and he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger.

By the sight of other good men’s trials, and the experience of his own, a man will be made more vigorous and lively in his duty, more warm and affectionate, more resolute and undaunted; the worse others are the better he will be; that which dismays others emboldens him.

The blustering wind makes the traveller gather his cloak the closer about him and gird it the faster. Those that are truly wise and good will be continually growing wiser and better. Matthew Henry

May you be encouraged when you see God's mercy.
