What should u do when you are afraid?

Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul would soon have settled in silence. If I say, “My foot slips,” your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up. Psalm 94:16-18

I hope that this last week you have had joy in delighting in the LORD and in His commandments and have meditated on Him throughout the day. God is our helper, shield and salvation. In Him we live and move and have our being. Through His love and mercy toward us, we have peace in our hearts and want to serve Him. His grace is freely given. His Word is pure and inspired by the Holy Spirit. God's mercies are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.

Have you recently struggled with fear or neglected to trust God in difficult situations? Well, Psalm 94 talks all about God's power. How He punishes the wicked, has mercy and comforts the righteous and those who trust Him with their whole heart.

Here's some lyrics from “Miracle” that go right with Psalm 94.

~I didn't know what to do so I went running to you to find that cure. Now I know for sure...
I'm done looking around. I finally figured it out. It's more than metaphysical. You got me up from down. Faith has shattered my doubts. I believe in miracles.

~I knew what I wanted to do, but just like gravity's pull I always did the opposite. Some people don't have a clue if all of this could be true, but take a look at me. I was blind but now I see. There's something that's missing if we can't recognize that our own existence is the miracle before our eyes.

What is really underneath the problem of fearfulness and lack of trusting God? Where do these struggles come from? 1 John 4:17-19 says,

Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.

This verse shows us pretty clearly that we fear because we do not have full faith in God's love for us. If we fully trust in that truth then we will have no need to fear because we will have assurance that God has all things in control and nothing is outside of it. Instead, we can have confidence that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us and that He will never leave us or forsake us.

Let's take for example one of the most common fears. The fear of the dark. Sometimes it is something we outgrow. I am thankful to God that I outgrew it.

So, what exactly is it in the dark that we fear? If we can't see anything, why do we fear it? Well, it is just that. We fear the unknown. We don't know what it is, therefore, we fear the worst and our imagination plays with the idea until we are convinced there is such a hideous “monster” out there and we tell ourselves that we will never go out into it even if it is your favorite book you left in the yard and the sprinklers are going to go on. See how the imagination turns a small fear of the unknown into a massive adrenaline rush. We have to guard against it.

I do think a righteous fear and a cautious fear which is also known as caution or wisdom is useful and God given. But I also think that when we allow our fear instincts to override common sense and the Holy Spirit (our conscience) and give in to extremes, that it becomes a sinful fear. At that point, we are not trusting God that He will protect us within His holy will. We then forget that He is actually in us through His Holy Spirit and we doubt His omnipotence sometimes.

So, this week, when you fear remember that perfect love casts out fear. The Holy Spirit is in you. You can ask God to quiet your fears and calm you and to see what He sees in the darkness. Such as, the stars in the beautiful expansive sky. The neat shadows that the bushes and trees make of the moonlight. The bright moon which is so happy and perfectly shaped by God. See? All those, things God has control of and He sees the beauty of His creation. So should you! Go get em' people! You can conquer your fears by God's help.

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. Psalm 56:3

In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? Psalm 56:11
