How People Cheat at Chess and Hans Niemann

With the whole Hans Niemann drama plaguing the chess world right now, it is easy to think, "How do you cheat in a chess match?" Today in our technologically advancing world, it has unfortunately become easier and easier to cheat at chess.

The most common method for online cheating is using outside assistance, whether that be a friend who is good at chess, or a chess engine. Stockfish as of September 2022, is the strongest CPU chess engine in the world. It is also become the most popular for use when cheating. It doesn't matter whether you have the best version of Stockfish or not, it will be able to beat nearly any opponent it faces, even Hikaru Nakamura if you recall.

Thankfully, chess.com's AI has gotten better at detecting whether a certain user is cheating or not. Just look at chess.com's 72-page report on Hans Niemann, where they concluded that Hans had cheated at least 100 games. Even though Hans is a GM, artificial intelligence could spot a cheat.

For OTB chess, it is not as simple. Let's dig in.

There are various methods for cheating in otb chess. I have heard of vibrators in your shoes, and even anal vibrating beads. The lengths that people will go to get fame and attention is unimaginable. These vibrators work by vibrating morse code to the player and giving him the suggested move by most likely a chess engine monitoring the game.

My opinion on Hans:

Entering a tournament recently, Hans Niemann passed through a metal detector with several other players.

Does this mean he is innocent? No. As you know, Hans has admitted to cheating. But you might not know that his coach GM Maxim Dlugy also admitted to cheating before in emails. https://nypost.com/2022/09/28/hans-niemanns-coach-admitted-to-cheating-emails/

It seems at the moment that all the evidence is against Hans. Nevertheless, we should never rush to judgment. FIDE's investigation will certainly provide the critical info we need to know whether Magnus is right that Hans is cheating, or that Hans has changed since his youth and is currently playing clean chess.

Let me know your opinion in the comments.

Thanks for reading this! This was my first blog! I would very much appreciate some very honest feedback!
