Tempo-rarily Safe
Tempos are important in chess, to develop with tempo without getting kicked out by your opponent's pieces helps you save time. However, moving a piece or pieces twice or more than twice helps the opponent gain an extra move called a tempo move. In this game between grandmaster and arguably the greatest chess player of all time Bobby Fischer and Robert Byrne is one of the demonstration of games why tempos are useful. Robert Byrne with the white pieces played a perfect execute of the Grunfeld opening up until move 10 where he suddenly played Bg5?? in which helped Bobby Fischer establish his brilliant move Na4!! that helps him win the game in a very nice fashion 29 moves after. The lesson in this post is that to never move a piece or pieces more than once during the opening unless to gain an advantage or remove a piece that paralyzes your position to prevent your opponent in gaining tempo moves.
