The Romantic Era was a very tactical period of chess. Sacrifices, Gambits, and Attacks dominated the 19th century. Players didn't just try to beat their opponent. They always tried to win by absolutely destroying their opponent.
One Famous Example was the Immortal Game.
As you can probably tell, Andersson decided to play very sacrificially, and gave up all of his major pieces, using only minor pieces to mate the king.
However, this way of playing has not been very popular in the Hypermodern era. This is because playing in this style is very risky and not always right. Players in the 21st century tend to develop and organize an attack without sacrificing a queen for a chance to attack. At the very least, this is not common in elite games.
If this type of playing were to come back, it would not survive for long. Computers have become strong enough to prevent attacks from sacrifices that do not have a direct checkmate.
However, our opponents are not computers!!!
