Never Give up.
Recently, there was an article titled, "Is it too late to become a GM ?" and the comments on that were mostly negative. Some of them were as follows:
1- You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
2- All GMs start at a young age and because of the plastic mind of a child, they adapt rapidly.
3- You just can't.
Well, if you need to ask this type of question, you probably will never be a GM or no where near. What I think is, "You need to keep working hard." Stop doubting yourself. I know this might be looking funny coming from an unrated 20 year old, but I just think if you set your mind to something you can achieve it. It will take time depending on how quickly you can adapt to patterns.
Now, many of you will say, nothing happens in 1 day. Of course, Chess.com wasn't built in one day, but Minecraft was. You just need to give some dedication. If you practice 2 hours a day. By the end of the week, you would have achieved 14 hours of practice. Continue it for a month, and it will be 60 hours. Now, be consistent and keep doing it daily. After an year, you would have achieved approximately 800 hours of experience. Now, you are not a pro like Mr. Kasparov or Nakamura but you know something that the remaining 40% don't know who were at the same level as you were an year ago. Do it for another year and now you have 1500+ hours of experience.
I have been playing sincerely since 4 years now. My parents never had the luxury to afford a chess club or coach. But, all I wanted was to learn. I spent my time on youtube, twitch, chess.com, etc. Sometimes, I didn't have money to get good internet, I had to go by foot 12 kms to get free public WiFi. I am not saying this to brag. I am just saying this to tell you that you got to believe in yourself. Today, I won my college tournament because of that hard work and finally got 1000 rating on chess.com after so many losses. So, dear community members, just do it. Start being serious if you wish to become a GM.
