Popularity: Popular

Type: Solid

Basics:

The italian game is a simple and popular opening for beginers and intermediate level, we also see grandmasters play it, but at advance level these types of games often lead to a draw

The italian game start with:

1.E4 E5

2. NF3 NC6

3: BC4

Or as shown in this example:

This is the italian game, or ''the quiet game''

There is 2 main variants to the italian game

-The giuoco piano game

-The 2 knights defence

Lets start whit the 2 knight defence, or Nf6

As you can see whit these arrows, there is 2 main variants

-The knight attack

-the 4 knights game

TOday i will only explain the knight attack

So what white is trying to do here is to fork the queen and rook, protected my the bishop

This can easily be countered whit d5, but what if black play this?

I bet you can find the winning move here... NXF7!!!!

But after d5, both white want to retreat their pieces to safety, and both players want to finish developpement and castle

The other main variant to the italian game is called the giuoco piano, of Bc5

Like the 2 knights defence, the giuoco piano also come whit 2 main variants:

1: The 4 knight game

2: Main line/center attack

Lets start whit the 4 knight game

i am gonna show you 1 variation about it

when black play d6, its important to play h3 to prevent Bg4, same thing goes whit black when white play d3

even if white has doubled pawns, the position is mostly equal, both players will finish their developpement and try to win the middlegame battle

Now, im gonna present you the main line

btw, taking the extra pawn is not the best idea for black

now both players will want to finish developpement, castle, and black may want to take back the center

this is the most popular lines for the italian game, so lets go to the exersises

Lets start whit the begining, what does whit play?

What is black response also called the 2 knight defence?
White is attacking our pawn, what do we play in this position?
Now what is black's most popular option?
Lets start whit the 4 knight game variation of the giuoco piano game, can you play it as white?
Whitout looking at the awnsers of the last puzzle, play the same thing as black
Great! Now lets play the main line as white
whitout looking at the last board, play it as black

Now that you know the main ideas behind the italian game, get out of there and play chess. Also take note that there is a bunch of other variations behind the italian game.
