My win against IM Tibor Károlyi

In this post I would like to show you an old game of mine, which I played  in 2013 in Dublin in the Irish National Club Championship. I was playing for Galway, and my opponent was another Hungarian, IM Tibor Károlyi, who happened to be playing for the Adare Chess Club from Limerick.

What makes this game special to me is the fact that I managed to beat a strong player with practically zero preparation: I knew the opening theory until move 5, and from that moment I was alone, forced to play my own chess. This is usually not the best recipe for success against titled players, but in this game it worked out perfectly.

Some interesting facts about Karolyi: he used to coach both Peter Leko and Judit Polgar in the 90s, and has written several chess books. I have read his two books about Karpov, and I can heartily recommend them. Generally, if you prefer to read "human" books (i.e. engine analysis not overdone and plenty of prose with the lines) about great players like Kasparov, Karpov, or Carlsen, then I would suggest to give a shot to Karolyi's books.

I hope you enjoyed this post. If you are looking for quality coaching to improve your game, I am currently accepting new students. Feel free to send me a private message here or on hogata11@gmail.com.
