Against the backdrop of Samarkand's timeless allure, the second instalment of this prestigious tournament promised a continuation of the captivating clashes that defined the opening round.

GM Magnus Carlsen won his second round game against GM Denis Khismatullin in a 50 move game in which Denis had blundered a drawn endgame with 38. gxh6? and 39. Kd3? in which Carlsen responded with the powerful move 39...Nf6!

On the other hand GM Denis Lazavik drew a hard fought game against a 2650 GM Evgeny Tomashevsky
