Rooks and Queens are more difficult than Knights and Bishops. It’s more likely that they want to go on open files or enemy ranks then the ‘standard’ central files in the opening. Minority attacks require the support of the rooks, while they can be important counterplay against hanging pawns or backward pawns.

Rooks in the middle game are often activated by the well-known ‘rook lift’, usually used with inclusive 3rd rank attacks and Ra/h3 rook lifts. Rooks may also be activated by the common no castle h2-h4.

In the ending, rooks prefer to go on the seventh rank, work together, or support a passed pawn.

Queens want to go in the center UNDISTURBED in all parts of the game. Sometimes they can exert pressure from a distance.
