Chess in the Ads: Hotels.com Tries a Boutique Opening

Hotels.com is running a series of ads highlighting the different types of hotels available. The "Boutique Hotel" spot features a couple sitting at a posh bar playing chess with an ultra-modern chess set.

The game has apparently just begun, with just three moves in, but we already have a very rare position.

Both players have made only pawn moves. White has pawns on c5 and b4, while Black has pawns on d5 and e6.

The lichess database shows this position being reached only 631 times, and never in a masters game. Black won 54% of the time.

My guess is that chess players who enjoy "single-origin coffee" aren't going to play conventional openings like us proles.

Time to use my old man powers.
