Don't Always Judge Your Play by Computer Analysis

I'm just an OK player, firmly embedded in the 1200s since I joined last December. But I've had tremendous luck beating 5 bots in the 1800+ category this week. Today I beat Olga (1900) in 19 moves on about my 10th try, but what blew me away was that the computer rated her play as 98.1 percent accurate.

Olga is programmed to play weird openings, like a4 or Nh3. In almost every game, it's easy to control the center and develop your pieces. But you better get an advantage quickly because she is very, very tough in the endgame.

It seems Olga got a high accuracy rating in this game because she captured a lot of my pieces without resistance. I sacrificed a rook, a bishop, a knight and two pawns in order to set up a queen-knight checkmate. Taking a look at the analysis afterward, I went from -9.68 to M2 with a single knight move.

Certainly I would have been toast if Olga hadn't been quite so piece-greedy. I did learn to give the accuracy rating respect, but not blind faith.

On to the 2000s!
