Chess.com offers two distinct systems that people often refer to as "leagues": the Players League (the automatic progression system) and Community Leagues (club-based team competitions).

1. Community Leagues (Club-Based)
These are organized by club admins and volunteers rather than Chess.com staff. They focus on team-based competition and "representing" a group.

Format: Typically involves Daily Chess, Live Club Matches, or Vote Chess.

Categories:

Geographic: Represent your country, state, or city (e.g., World League, European League).

Thematic/Interest: Leagues for fan clubs, university students (Collegiate Chess League), or corporate teams (NACCL).

Tournament Types: Some use a Swiss format, while others are knockout-style or "Multi-Club Arenas."

How to Join: You must first join a Club that participates in these leagues. Go to Social > Clubs, find a club that interests you, and look at their "News" or "Description" to see which leagues they are active in.

2. Players League (The Progression System)
If you see a trophy icon next to your name or a ranking like "Bronze" or "Silver," you are in the Players League. This is an automated weekly competition.

Division Tiers
There are 8 levels of progression. You advance by finishing in the top spots of your 50-person division each week.

How to Earn Points (Trophies)
You earn points simply by playing rated games. The longer the time control, the more points you get:

Bullet: 3 points for a win / 1 for a draw.

Blitz: 9 points for a win / 3 for a draw.

Rapid: 15 points for a win / 5 for a draw.
Bonus: You get extra points for wins/draws during Arena Tournaments.

3. Chess.com Community Championships
In 2026, Chess.com is also running a series of Community Championships. These are specific, high-level events for different variants and themes:

Puzzles Championship: A recurring event for the fastest solvers.

Variant Championships: Including Fog of War, Spell Chess, and Duck Chess.
Registration: Usually found under the Events or Tournaments tab on the site.
Note: Unlike the Players League, you cannot be "demoted" once you reach a new tier. If you reach Silver and stop playing for a month, you will still be in Silver when you return.
