Chess.com Leagues
On Chess.com, "Leagues" usually refers to one of two things: the automated Players League (the tiered progression system) or Community/Club Leagues (team-based competitions).
1. The Players League (Progression Tiers)
This is the system most casual players interact with. It is an automated weekly competition where you earn "trophies" (points) by playing rated games to move up through 8 distinct tiers.
How to Earn Points
Points are awarded based on the game's time control. Winning or drawing in faster formats gives fewer points than in slower ones:
Format
Points for a Win
Points for a Draw
Bullet

1
Blitz

Rapid

Arena Bonus: If you play in a Chess.com Arena tournament, your tournament points are added directly to your league score as a bonus.
Important: "Hyper Bullet" (games 30 seconds or faster) typically does not count toward league points.
The 8 Tier Hierarchy
Each week, you are placed in a group of 50 players. You must finish in the top spots of your group to advance to the next level:
Wood: Top 20 advance.
Stone: Top 15 advance.
Bronze: Top 10 advance.
Silver: Top 5 advance.
Crystal: Top 3 advance.
Elite: Top 3 advance.
Champion: Top 1 advances.
Legend: The final tier. Once reached, you stay here and compete for the top of the leaderboard.
2. Community & Club Leagues
These are organized by the community and require you to join a specific Club to participate.
World League / European League: Large-scale competitions where clubs representing different countries or regions play matches (usually Daily Chess) against each other.
Collegiate Chess League (CCL): Specifically for university students. The Spring 2026 season recently concluded its playoffs in late April, featuring a $25,000 prize pool and 4v4 team formats.
PRO Chess League: A high-level professional league often featuring Grandmasters and professional teams.
3. 2026 Community Championships
Chess.com also runs specific "Community Championships" for variants. For example, the 4-Player Chess Championship 2026 ran in April, and various other variant events (like Fog of War or Spell Chess) appear throughout the year under the Events tab.
Pro Tip: You can check your current league standing by clicking the Trophy icon on your sidebar or home screen. If you haven't played a game yet this week, you won't be placed in a division until your first rated match.
