Chess.com Live Club Tournaments
Chess.com Live Club Tournaments allow clubs to host their own private events in real-time, restricted to their members. Unlike standard site-wide tournaments, these are managed by club leadership (Super Admins, Admins, or Coordinators).
1. Types of Live Club Tournaments
When a club hosts a "Live" event, it usually takes one of two forms:
Internal Club Tournaments
These are individual competitions where members of the same club play against each other.
Formats: * Swiss: Players are paired against others with similar scores. Best for a fair ranking.
Arena: A "meat-grinder" style where you play as many games as possible within a time limit. Points are awarded for wins and win streaks.
Access: Found under the Clubs tab on your profile or by going to Play > Live Chess > Tournaments > Club Tournaments.
Live Club Matches (Team vs. Team)
These are "Club vs. Club" events where you represent your team against another specific club.
Pairings: You are paired against one person from the opposing club based on rating.
Scoring: Your individual win contributes to the club's total score. The club with the most total points wins the match.
2. How to Create One (For Admins)
To create a Live Tournament for your club, you must have Coordinator status or higher.
Navigate to Play > Play and select the Tournaments tab.
On the right sidebar, click "Club Tournament".
Select your Club from the dropdown menu.
Customize Settings:
Time Control: Bullet, Blitz, or Rapid.
Type: Swiss or Arena.
Schedule: Set a start time (registration typically opens 1 hour before start).
Rating Range: You can restrict the event to certain skill levels.
3. How to Join
If your club has an upcoming tournament:
Notification: You will often receive a club message or see a notice in the club’s "News" or "Upcoming Events" section.
Registration: Go to the Live Chess area. Open the Tournaments tab and look for the "Club" icon. You must click Join within the 60 minutes before the start time.
4. Why Use Club Tournaments?
Privacy: Keep "sandbaggers" or disruptive players out by limiting entry to your vetted club members.
Community: Great for Twitch streamers, local chess clubs moving online, or companies hosting internal leagues.
Specific Variants: Clubs can host tournaments for Chess960, Bughouse, or 3-Check if they want to spice things up.
Note: If you are a member of both clubs participating in a Live Club Match, the system will force you to choose one side to represent before you can join the tournament lobby.
