The monthly bots on Chess.com have become a fan-favorite tradition, typically refreshing on the first of every month with a specific theme (past themes have included "Cat Bots," "The Duolingo Owl," and "Chess Personalities").

As of May 2026, here is the latest on the bot feature and current trends:

Current Bot Theme (May 2026)
While Chess.com often keeps the specific "Persona" identities for the monthly bots a surprise until launch, the current rotation typically includes seasonal or event-driven characters.

Thematic Boards: This month’s bots often come with exclusive board themes (like the popular "Ice" or "Nature" themes seen in recent cycles) that are only available while playing against them.
Limited Availability: Remember that these bots are "exclusive." If you don't defeat them and earn their crowns by the end of the month, they are usually archived to make room for the June set.

New Technical Features in 2026
Chess.com has recently overhauled the bot interface to make practice more "human-like."

Dynamic Personalities: Unlike older engines that just played "perfectly" until they made a programmed blunder, the 2026 bots use improved AI models to mimic human styles—like the "Aggressive Attacker" or the "Solid Defender."
Restored Customization: After some user pushback earlier this year regarding the removal of specific training tools, Chess.com has restored the ability to:

Start from Custom Positions: Great for practicing specific openings against a bot.
Toggle the Evaluation Bar: You can now choose whether to see the "Advantage" meter during your game for instant feedback.
Coach Commentary: The bots are now more integrated with the "Coach" feature, giving you "live" snarky or encouraging comments based on the move you just played.

How to Find Them
Navigate to the "Play" menu.
Select "Computer" or "Bots."
Look for the top row labeled "Monthly" or "Special Events." These bots are usually ranked from very easy (200–400 Elo) to Master level (2500+ Elo).
Why Play Them?
Stress-Free Practice: Since there is no rating on the line, it's the best way to test a new opening.
Crown Collecting: Many users treat the monthly bots like "achievements," trying to collect all the gold crowns before the month ends.
Unique Styles: Monthly bots often have "quirks"—for example, a bot might refuse to trade Queens or might be obsessed with pushing its h-pawn.
