I Checkmated Myself: The Funniest Chess Fail”

I’ll never forget the day I managed to checkmate myself. I was playing online, feeling unstoppable, and I thought I’d discovered a clever way to trap my opponent’s king. My pieces were active, I was pushing pawns with confidence, and I was already picturing the glory of a brilliant win. Then, reality hit me harder than a rook on the seventh rank — my own king had no squares left, and suddenly the game ended with me staring at the word “Checkmate”. The worst part? My opponent didn’t even know what happened until I resigned out of shame.

As funny as it sounds, this embarrassing moment taught me an important lesson: always pay attention to your king’s safety. No matter how good your attack looks, if your king is boxed in with no escape squares, you’re walking straight into disaster. Many beginners (and even advanced players) get so caught up in their attack that they forget to double-check whether their own king can breathe. One quick scan of your back rank before launching into fireworks can save you from humiliation.

Looking back, I laugh at that moment. But honestly, I’m glad it happened, because it changed how I play. I now treat my king like royalty — always keeping an exit square, making sure my pawns aren’t choking him, and never celebrating too early. If you take one thing from my failure, let it be this: protect your king first, and then go for glory. Otherwise, you might join the exclusive (and very funny) club of players who accidentally checkmated themselves.
