Disarming the London System: A Practical Approach for Black
In this blog post, I’ll share a game that demonstrates my approach to facing the London System. My strategy involves an early strike with c5, followed by bringing my queen to b6—applying pressure on the queenside while simultaneously covering key defensive squares. By combining this with a fianchetto of my dark-squared bishop, I aim to disrupt my opponent’s typical London plans, making it difficult for them to settle into their familiar structures.
What follows is my annotated analysis of the game. Please note that I have not yet verified the analysis with an engine, so readers are encouraged to explore the lines further if they wish.
Since this game ended in a win for me, there were fewer direct lessons to take away—but perhaps the London players among you will find it interesting to see how their system can be challenged. If you have any thoughts, alternative ideas, or experiences with similar setups, I’d love to hear them—feel free to share your insights in the comments. After all, every game is a chance to learn, whether from success or mistakes.
