We Lost A Legend Today

Tonight, the chess world mourns the passing of five-time world chess champion and self-proclaimed fantasy football nerd, Magnus Carlsen. At 6:00PM EST here in the United States, the Carlsen family posted this on Twitter:

Today, April 1st, 2024, our beloved Magnus passed peacefully at the age of 33 at his residence in Tønsberg. We thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time as we cope with having to live with the massive insurance policy he leaves us.

At the time of his death, Norwegian doctors had declared that Carlsen had died of natural causes, but the Carlsen family is still accusing German grandmaster, Hans Niemann of foul play.

In a short statement, Hans Niemann said and I quote, "The autopsy speaks for itself".

Magnus Carlsen's funeral is scheduled to be held on April 7th. Grandmasters and chess enthusiasts alike are expected to flock to witness the end of an era. And according to a leaked guest list, all of the chess players Magnus Carlsen accused of cheating will be attending his funeral, bumping up the attendance number to about 10,394.

Surprisingly though, not invited to the funeral is the Chief Chess Officer of Chess.com, Daniel Rensch. When approached about this apparent snub, Mr. Rensch commented,

My favorite type of conspiracy is the one that's not real.

In spite of this snub Danny says while the funeral is on he plans to spend his free time fixing chess.com and experimenting with Java!

So far it's not going very well...

Despite these small, miniscule details about the funeral it is important to remember that Magnus's funeral will be a monumental moment in chess history, witnessed by millions. One of the game's most brilliant minds laid to rest forever. He may be gone, but we won't forget him.... until literally the next day when the Solar Eclipse passes over.

Conclusion

In conclusion all I have is happy April 1st and have a great rest of your day.

Thanks again,
