How To Work With Chess Studies
Hello Chess Friends,
In today's topic, we are gonna discuss chess studies which are also called chess compositions.
Introduction to Studies :
Chess studies are composed by authors or chess lovers. You don't have to be a super-GM to compose studies. They are positions created by mere imagination and not through practical play, But they serve as a right partner in the developmental journey of our game.
Benefits of solving :
- It improves creativity and imaginary skills
- it improves pattern recognition skills
- it teaches us certain endgame patterns
- it teaches us to use our pieces to their maximum capacity
- helps in analyzing long-term variations with accuracy
All the above stated is only useful when done regularly
Methods of solving a chess study :
I will explain the following header with two or three positions, So that it will be easier for you to understand the ways of working with compositions.
Imaginative method :
Under this method, after the position is set on the board, We have to imagine the way the position can be won or the way the position can be drawn (even stalemate imagination is also possible). After imagining the possible result position, we start working on plans and then followed by moves to achieve the wanted result. Let's work on two examples in this way...
In the above position, we should be able to visualize the checkmate position. This is known as imaginative method, First - We realize the king is locked so it is possible to checkmate him. Now let's look into the solution.

Now moving to another example of the same pattern.

Now let's look into the forcing moves method :
In this method the moves in the calculated variations are quite forced and won't have a better alternative, Thus the solutions constitute a forced and clear variation. This training helps while calculating long tactics during the game. Now let's look into an example.. .
All the moves in this position are forced and has no other way out.

Abstract :
There are many advantages of solving studies, But you have to make sure you work on it regularly for better results. There is another important method, which can be considered funny, But it is worth a try. That method is Read and Solve method . In this method when we are unable to figure out the answer for a position, we look into the answer and then understand the pattern. This helps in solving studies with the same pattern.
