How to move the pieces
In this lesson, you will learn
The movement patterns of the pieces
King
The king can move one square in any direction
If the king is being threatened this is called a check
If Your king is in check and can no longer move a safe space this is called checkmate and ends the game
Queen
The queen is the strongest piece in your arsenal
It can move in all directions all across the board
Highest point value (point values posted at end of blog)
Bishop
Moves diagonally
You have two bishops one on white squares and one on black
Can be tricky to anticipate future attacks
Knight
Most complicated movement pattern
You have two knights
Moves in an “L” shape
The only piece that can jump pieces
Rook
You have two rooks
Rooks move in straight lines
You can “castle” with the king
Pawn
Pawns can move two or one space first move after that they only move one
Can only take pieces diagonally
Can promote if you reach the other end of the board
Can't go diagonal unless a piece is there
