What Your Favourite Opening Says About You
What Your Favourite Chess Opening Says About You
Chess openings are more than moves, you can tell a lot about a person chess style by just there opening. Some players want wild attacks, some people want complete control, and some just want to see their opponents suffer for 40 moves straight. So, the questions which type of person are you?
Whether you're sacrificing pieces in the King's Gambit or slowly draining your opponent in the London it shows who you really are when playing the game of chess.
So, lets expose the truth and prepare to be offended.
Italian Game 🍝
If you play the Italian Game, there is nothing wrong, you like one of the most boring openings ever and you probably learned chess from YouTube, your only play is waiting for them to blunder or fall for the "Fried Liver Trap".
Overview ℹ️
- Loves quick development
- Thinks bishops belong on c4 no matter what
- Has watched at least one opening tutorial at 2am
- Wants to attack chances without taking too many risks
- Says “this is theory” after moving 3
Overall, Italian players usually play solidly and are aggressive when needed. You love chaos but you just have a clean position with the possibility of violence
Rating: 8/10
Sicilian Defence 😔
Next, is the Sicilian Defence. This opening is so annoying if you play the Sicilian you either have sat down at your desk and learned the 400 variations and you actually know how to play it then it's fine perfect opening but, if you have no clue what you are doing and you just saw it in a game Magnus Carlsen and was like "Yeah I could do that" you probably can't and never win as Black
Overview ℹ️
- Thinks defending is boring
- Watches attacking compilations for fun
- Either wins brilliantly or loses instantly
- Calls every move “dynamic”
- Has definitely premoved a sacrifice online
Overall, the Sicilian is a good opening if you know it and play like an engine but is way too complicated for a beginner's mind to understand
Rating 7/10
English Opening ☕
Now this opening this is where it is at, this is the opening I play, and I love it, but I can't be biased so I will give it a fair rating. If you open with c4 you're not normal like other people playing 1. e4 or 1. d4 you enjoy mysterious positions that no one even bats an eye to look at.
Overview ℹ️
- Likes “positional pressure”
- Plays 15 quiet moves before suddenly attacking
- Secretly enjoys confusing opponents
- Probably owns a chess book nobody else has read
Overall, the English players are patient and tricky. The don't rush attacks they usually end up in a closed position and then dominate in the end game slowly building pressure until their opponent collapses
Rating: 9/10
Bongcloud Attack ☁️
The Bongcloud is the most feared opening in chess where you get a lot of development and is pure skill. If you play the Bongcloud you don't fear chess. Chess fears you.
Overview ℹ️
- Starts the game by immediately questioning reality
- Treats “king safety” as a myth invented by cowards
- Makes Stockfish visibly uncomfortable
- Either wins psychologically or loses immediately — no in-between
- Has definitely said “trust me bro, it’s theory” while doing it
Overall, the Bongcloud is the most feared opening in all of chess they have definitely already calculated checkmate before you have even said "Good Luck"
Rating: 999/10
Bird's Opening
The people that play the Bird are so annoying, they play f4 as if there the best players in the world but basically tell their opponent "I don't respect traditional chess" and then, there probably actually good at chess and end up winning the game 😧
- Opens the game with confidence and mild confusion
- Thinks kingside attacks are a lifestyle choice
- Has accepted that sometimes the king will suffer for art
- Loves unbalanced positions for no clear reason
- Probably says “it’s actually underrated” a lot 🤓👆
Rating: 4/10
So next time you play, remember:
you're not just choosing an opening... you're revealing who you are
Even if it's the Bird
