Frying the French Defense
Ever wish there was a way to crush the french defense easily? This article doesn't show an instant victory, however it does show a way to take all the opening theory your opponent knows, and burn it to a crisp. You can convert the French Defense into a KIA-King's Indian Attack. The King's Indian attack can be played against the French as well as Sicilian and many other 1. e4 opening responses. The one it doesn't work against is 1. e5.
The King's Indian attack is a chess opening which resembles a KID(King's Indian Defense) but with a few changes of piece placement and plans. The King's Indian attack starts with 1.e4 followed by 2.d3 or 2.Nf3, depending on the situation. You may also start with 1.Nf3 which can also transpose into the Reti opening. Below I've show one ideal set-up for White.
The queen on e1 is there because normally a bishop would be pinning the knight on f3. Moving the queen to e1 relinquishes the pin and threatens e4-e5 if it's legal. The thing about playing the KIA against the french is that there is no longer the possibility of having a bishop pinning the knight because it's trapped in the pawn chain. One way play could go(if black is insistent with using their opening) is...
Most french defense players wont like this line as it's unlike anything the other french defense lines have to offer. This can also cause your opponent to mess up and blunder as they're in uncharted territory more than not. If your playing against a Sicilian defense, it's better to play 2.Nf3 followed by 3.d3. One of the better lines black could play is...
It's important to notice how White goes for the exact same set-up here. Set-ups for Black my vary depending on the fact if White transpose into the KIA through 1.e4 or goes more directly into it with 1.Nf3.
