A checkmate with 2 sacrifices!? Damiano's checkmate

Hey guys Im back and its been awhile since Ive made a blog because of school and stuff so from now on Ill try to do twice a weekhappy.png. Anyways the Damiano's checkmate is a type of mate that involves 1 to 2 ( depending on the scenario) rook sacrifices and then is followed by a check by the queen and then its M1.

Motives:

  • Sacrifice of rook(s) for after Mate in 2
  • King gets trapped by his own pieces
  • Shows how even extreme sacrifices can lead to checkmates

Now lets starthappy.png

Check out this position

This position looks completely winning for black  as they're up two minor pieces.....but if its white to move there is hidden checkmate in just a few moves....the first move is what might seem like a tremendously horrible blunder, Rh8 or rook to h8. This might seem like a blunder but in situations where the king has an opening pieces can get through, you always want to see the most forcing move possible.....no matter how extreme it might seem. And if theres no way you can see to back it up, then theres probably none. here is a diagram.

As you can see, the king is absolutely FORCED to take the rook and after, the most instinctive and correct move is Rook to h1 or Rh1+. This is a very obvious move as it is a check which is what a lot of beginners look for first. And to add on, the king has some limited spaces.

After this strong check by the rook, Black can (either block by the bishop) can move the king back to h8. And after this, you play another mind boggling sacrifice, Rook to h8 check which, again, is a very forcing move forcing the king to take the rook. little black may know is that there is a M3 or mate in 3 and the game is over. To an inexperienced chess player, this position for white might seem devastating for white while truthful, its more devastating for black. Here is the sacrifice

After this, the most common and correct move would be queen to h1 check. This move leads to the black king going back to the g8 square. And after that, you play queen to h7 check or Qh7+....This is a VERY attacking check and now you may see a Mate in 2 moves.....

After this, you can probably see that black has no other option but to got to f8 to Kf8 and has been struck with realization thatches gonna be checkmated in 1 move and so is....

As you can see, black is surprisingly checkmated even though he was winning by a LOT of pieces....

I hope you guys like my blog on this very unique mate as it took a while to set up the positions and the moves so if you don't like it, think that I made a mistake, or even just liked it, please post a comment and if you have any suggestion, please let me know and also please take the time to check out my other blogs as well because if you liked this one, I can guarantee you will like my others too.

Thanks
