Well if that were true then today the world would know the name of a chess player Moriarty, he is described as intelligent, a mathematician, that is quite similar to the quote of the author of the novel.

The story could have gone in another direction.

Yes, that's right, when we witness a professional chess player named Sherlock Holmes, whose appearance in a chess game made Doctor Watson, a chess player, fascinated by Holmes' intelligence and wanting to be friends with him. 

If we go in that direction, Professor Moriarty is also a chess player on par with Holmes.

In the novel, there is a key detail which is the encounter between Holmes and Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls, the two characters have the opportunity to face each other and compete directly. In the end, both fall into the waterfall and die. It would be absurd for me to compare Sherlock with Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, and Moriarty with Emanuel Lasker because Moriarty and Lasker were both mathematics professors.

At the Reichenbach Falls, if instead of a war, there was a game of chess between two chess geniuses. Just like the second chess championship match between Emanuel Lasker and Wilhelm Steinitz.
