Tilting and How to Avoid It
Tilting, one of the nightmares many chess players know about/experienced before. What is tilting exactly? Tilting, is generally when one loses a ton of rating in a certain period of time, feeling as if they 'aren't as good as they used to be'; or even 'lost the skill they had learned prior'.
Even Grandmasters experience tilting, Magnus Carlsen has multiple times, beginner players can too. I have also experienced it multiple times personally, due to taking long breaks from chess at a time. On that note, we're going to discuss the key contributors to tilting. One of these includes long/frequent breaks from the game, to avoid this, play at least one game, one lesson, or 2-5 puzzles a day. (You can do more or less, whichever fits you)
The Four Main Ways to Avoid Tilting
Other than the one i just listed, there are 4 other easy ways to avoid this challenge and keep your otherwise lost elo. One, learn one new thing in chess each day/week if you have a busy schedule. Even learning something as simple as a new opening variant can go a long way. Two, talk with other players/friends about chess, it'll keep your mind sharp and help you remember what you have already learned instead of focusing on packing more in. Three, watch chess content and/or read chess books, a common thing among masters, content consuming! And no, i dont mean brainrot, i mean good videos and books on chess. Learning openings, moves, tactics, and even how your favourite masters play can help you stay sharp!
Lastly, my personal favourite thing (especially for artists and younger kids) crafts! By this, i mean writing chess moves, writing a journal about all of your favourite games you've played each month. Some also draw the pieces, which isnt as effective, but still makes your mind think of chess. Even a game a day can change your elo drastically, good luck and dont tilt! <3
End Note: This blog was short, as i haven't been active in ages, and just wanted to give you all some content before i ditch the site forever. Many probably dont remember me nor my new username, that's fine! Let me know if i should get back into blogging, or at least enjoy this one! Hope you enjoy my short blog, hello chess.com!
