In 2009,  he became the 30th Chinese player to earn the Grandmaster title. Since then, Ding has gone on to have an incredibly successful career, winning numerous tournaments and becoming a household name in the chess world.

In September 2017, he became the first Chinese player to qualify for a Candidates Tournament, the penultimate stage in the World Championship. At the Candidates Tournament 2018, he placed 4th with 1 win and 13 draws, the only candidate without a loss at the event.

After a 7–7 score tie in the classical time format, on 30 April, the match proceeded to tiebreakers with rapid time format. After draws in the first three games, Ding Liren won with black in the final game of the rapid section to become the 17th Undisputed World Chess Champion.  Ding also became the first Chinese chess player to hold the title and, jointly with the 2020 women's world chess champion Ju Wenjun, made China the holder of both the open and women's world titles.

With the match going into tie-breaks, Ding won €1.1 million, 55% of the prize total. Nepomniachtchi won €900,000, 45% of the prize total.
