Chess traps are a crucial part of the game as they can help players gain an advantage over their opponents. A trap is a move or series of moves that appears to offer a tempting opportunity to the opponent but leads to a disadvantageous position. Traps can be used to surprise an opponent, force them to make a mistake, or distract them from their strategy.

Traps can also be used to control the center of the board, which is important in chess. By trapping an opponent's piece, a player can gain control of a critical square or force their opponent to waste moves trying to free their trapped piece.

In addition, studying and recognizing common traps can help players avoid falling into them themselves. It is essential to be aware of potential traps and to think carefully before making a move.

Overall, understanding and utilizing chess traps can give a player a significant advantage in the game and help them achieve victory.

3. Budapest Trap

There are a lot of options that you have when your opponent starts out with d4 and one of the most common responses is Nf6. White typically will respond developing one of his knights to the 3rd rank.

The trap comes when white starts out with Nd2. Here black is going to give up a pawn with e4 and then will move Ng4, attacking the pawn on e5.

If white falls for the trap and tries to kick the knight off the g4 square with h3, white will either lose the game immediately or lose lots of material.

Even if white doesn’t fall for the trap, black still has a lot of different options to keep up the pressure and there are still many attacking lines for black to attack and can easily get the material back that he gave up early on in the game.

4. Monticelli Trap

In chess, the Monticelli Trap is a combination in the Bogo–Indian Defence, named for Italian champion Mario Monticelli.

5. Budapest Trap

The Kieninger Trap derives from the Budapest Gambit. Black rarely offers up a gambit but the budapest gambit is the rare exception. After black gives up his pawn on e5, he moves his knight to g4, attacking the white pawn on e5.

White then has the option to either give back the pawn that was taken in the gambit or try and hold on to the extra pawn. The Kieninger Trap is unleashed if white tries to hold on the extra pawn

The Légal Trap  (also known as Légal Pseudo-Sacrifice and Légal Mate) is a chess opening trap, characterized by a queen sacrifice followed by checkmate with minor pieces if Black accepts the sacrifice. The trap is named after the French player Sire de Légall.

Joseph Henry Blackburne, a British master and one of the world's top five players in the latter part of the 19th century, set the trap on many occasions.
