Chess, sometimes called the "game of kings" has evolved massively. Today I will be sharing some of the oldest chess sets of all time with you. So, without further explanation, let's begin.
Afrasiab Chessmen
The Afrasiab Chessmen is the oldest recorded chess set. The archeologist who discovered them in 1977 was Jurij F. Burjakov who dated them back to around 700 AD. The pieces are made of real ivory and are currently under display at the State Museum of Samarkand.
Persian Chess Set
The Persian Chess Set is one of the oldest chess sets, dating back to the 11th century. Although it is very old, its abstract art style mysteriously resembles modern art style.
Charlemagne Chess Set
The Charlemagne chess set was thought to date back to the 12th century in Salerno, Italy. Unfortunately, several pieces were lost during the French Revolution. Today, the set consists of two kings, two queens, four elephants (bishop), four knights, three chariots (rooks) and one foot soldier (pawns).
Lewis Chessmen
The Lewis Chessmen set dates back to the 12th century and is one of the most well-known chess sets. They were expertly made of Walrus tusk and whale teeth. This stunningly detailed set was found in 1891 in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. However, it is thought to have originated in Trondheim, the medieval capital of Norway.
