The Handshake. Missed Opportunity?
You don't know what to do. You look at the board and sigh, then decide it is too hard. You offer a draw. The opponent accepts. The thought haunts you in your mind. Could of I pushed for more?
Everyone has a moment where you drew a game, but then go to game review and you were completely winning, but you drew.
Today we will be going over how to avoid these situations, and some that happened to myself.
HOW TO AVOID
When you are playing a chess game and you are about to offer a draw, think before you do so. Here are some important things to consider:
- Do we have equal material?
- Can I make progress?
- Is there a possibility of winning this game?
Once you ask yourself those 3 questions, you are probably in the clear. But, 2 years ago I didn't know that. So, I offered a draw in a winning position.
2 years ago, I just thought that "all rook endgames where drawn." But now I release this isn't the case.
So, next time you are about to offer a draw, just think for a minute and take the 3 questions into play.
See you next time! Bye!
