History & Origins:
  • Chess originated in India around the 6th century AD, where it was called Chaturanga.
  • The word "checkmate" comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," which means "the King is dead."
  • The second book ever printed in English was about chess.
  • The folding chessboard was reportedly invented by a chess-playing priest in 1125 to circumvent the Church's ban on priests playing the game. It looked like two books when folded.
  • The first chessboard with alternating dark and light squares appeared in Europe in 1090. 
Game Play & Possibilities:
  • There are vastly more possible unique chess games than there are atoms in the observable universe. The estimated number of atoms is around 10^80, while the number of unique chess games is estimated to be 10^120.
  • In the first four moves of a game, there are hundreds of billions of possible positions and move combinations.
  • The longest official chess game on record lasted 269 moves and took over 20 hours.
  • Theoretically, the longest possible chess game could last up to 5,949 moves. 
Pieces & Movement:
  • The Queen was initially the weakest piece on the board, only able to move one square diagonally at a time. It became the strongest piece in the 15th century in Spain.
  • The modern-day Queen can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in any direction.
  • The Knight can move in an "L" shape and is the only piece that can jump over other pieces.
  • The Bishop's move, which originally represented elephant-mounted troops, evolved from only moving two squares diagonally and leaping over pieces to its current movement of any number of diagonal squares. 
Achievements & Records:
  • Garry Kasparov played "The World" in a single game of chess that lasted over four months, involving 50,000 players from 75 countries voting on moves.
  • Magnus Carlsen holds the record for the highest Elo rating ever achieved: 2882.
  • The youngest person to become a Grandmaster (GM) is Abhimanyu Mishra, who achieved the title at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days.
  • Emanuel Lasker holds the record for the longest reign as World Chess Champion: 26 years and 337 days. 
Interesting Details:
  • Chess has been used as a form of strategic military training since ancient times.
  • Chess can help improve memory function and may delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
  • Chess players traditionally shake hands at the beginning and end of tournament games to signify respect.
  • The Elo rating system, developed for chess, is now used in many other sports.
  • There's a hybrid sport called Chess Boxing where rounds of chess are interspersed with rounds of boxing.
  • There was a period (1993-2006) with two parallel World Chess Championships due to a dispute between Garry Kasparov and FIDE.
