Game 2 of 2024's FIDE World Championship subsides in a draw. With the draw, comes basic takeaway value that it was fairly distinct from Ding Vs Gukesh at Sinquefield earlier this year, where Ding also helmed the white troops. Closely enough, even this game resulted in a draw by Threefold Repetition, only that the material remained equal.

The notation I discuss below belongs solely to game 2 of the 2024 World Championship that recently concluded.

A draw in Game 2 should come across as no surprise. Ding didn't force this hand, the rook trade need simply have been, only the takeaway onward meant more.

All a draw ought to do is ensure there is a takeaway,

as much as what a twisting headline did upon Ding's victory in Game 1.

Ding "draws" first blood is confusing enough. While Ding can rely on more draws that come his way, Game 3 sets him back with the Black pieces. He mentioned after Game 1 that his preparation was met with moves by Gukesh that were not anticipated.

In 2018, GM Fabiano Caruana used GM Magnus Carlsen's Sicilian response to E4 as a repeat in Game 3, from the previous set of moves in Game 1. Perhaps tomorrow's Game 3 of 2024's championship might venture about a different preparation from Ding, given what opening Gukesh leads with. Playing black in general calls for improvisation based on white's decision, at least in that 1. D4 doesn't take kindly to e5. But GMs are the greats, actively encouraging bending the ways of the game that even the squares know not of.
