EVERYDAY CHESS EXAMPLES

I often find myself comparing real life situations to chess positions.

From conversations to decisions, there’s always a move or strategy that feels familiar.

Here are 4 examples where I think chess and life go hand in hand:

Example 1:
The Countergambit in Conversations

When someone asks you a question, you can respond directly or answer with another question.

For instance, someone asks: “Why didn’t you call me?”

and you respond: “Why do you assume I’m the one who should call first?”

Suddenly, you’re counterattacking. It feels like gaining tempo in real life.

Example 2:
Joking in Neutral Positions

I joke a lot...probably too much. But when there’s awkward silence, forcing a joke feels off, like opening up a quiet, closed chess position without a plan.

Sometimes, it’s better to just keep things calm and wait for the next right moment, than saying something in a wrong moment and being misunderstood.

Example 3:
Overextension in Words

I’ve been guilty of saying too much and regretting it later. It’s just like pushing pawns too far in chess...you can’t pull them back, and you end up creating weaknesses you didn’t need.

Staying patient and holding back is better for the endgame, even if it feels less satisfying in the moment.

P.s. I came to this conclusion around 2 months ago when I comented on Igor Smirnov's post.

I am glad he liked it grin

 Example 4:

Amateur Boxer

I was watching an amateur boxing match once, and this guy threw a punch right at the start. He had no defense, and his opponent quickly turned it around, putting him in a losing position. It immediately reminded me of beginners that attack with the Queen too early.

Some moves are better left unplayed.
