Reading the Classics #15: William Bradford
If you know who William Bradford (1590-1657) was, then you'll know why I chose this blog for today. William Bradford was one of the original Pilgrims who sailed to America aboard the Mayflower. After the death of John Carver, the first Governor of Plymouth, William Bradford stepped in and became the second Governor. He provided strength and stability to the newly-formed colony, and helped it prosper for many years until his death in 1657. So if you haven't guessed already, the reason I'm featuring him now is because Thanksgiving is literally tomorrow, and he's so connected to the Pilgrims that it just seemed appropriate.
But now you're probably asking, "Why is he in your Classics series?" Well, during his time in Plymouth, he wrote a history of the Colony. As it's a firsthand account, it's extremely accurate, and today it's considered to be a classic. It's called Of Plymouth Plantation, and I happen to have read the book.
1. Of Plymouth Plantation
It was a bit hard to follow sometimes, considering that he was writing in the 1600s. But overall, it was a good read and I recommend it. You learn a lot about Plymouth and Early America from the manuscript.
Well, I know that wasn't very much, but I want to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. I for one am going to a friend's house tomorrow for Thanksgiving, and it's gonna be great. You've most likely noticed by now that I'm doing blog posts that are themed (Bradford near Thanksgiving, Stoker and Shelley near Halloween), and if you guys think it's a good idea, let me know.
Oh, and one last thing. I've just begun another blog that you should check out. Here's the link. Thanks for reading.
