If Pokemon was in Chess

If Pokémon were integrated into Chess, it would likely take one of two forms:
a thematic redesign of the pieces or a mechanical overhaul that incorporates type matchups and RNG.

⚔️ Pokémon Chess: The "Overhauled" Rules
Several creators have developed "Pokémon Chess" variants that fundamentally change how the game is played:
Type Matchups: Every piece is assigned a Pokémon type.Super Effective: If you capture a piece you are strong against (e.g., Water vs. Fire), you get an extra move.
Not Very Effective: If you capture a piece you are weak against, both pieces are removed from the board.
Immunity: Ghost types or other immunities can prevent certain pieces from being captured at all by specific attackers.
The Luck Factor: Unlike standard chess, these variants often include RNG:Miss Chance: There is often a 10% chance for any capture attempt to fail.
Critical Hits: A 1-in-6 or 1-in-16 chance to land a "crit," which may allow an additional move.
No Checkmate: Many versions remove "Check" and "Checkmate" entirely. You must physically capture the King to win the game.

♟️ Thematic Piece Assignments
If you were simply replacing traditional pieces with Pokémon based on their design or lore, a typical "Team" might look like this:

Piece
Pokémon Candidate
Reason
Pawn
Pawniard
Its name and design are literally based on a pawn.
Knight
Rapidash
 or Calyrex
Based on the horse-shaped piece or a mounted rider.
Bishop
Bisharp
Its name is a direct reference to the Bishop.
Rook
Stakataka
 or Bastiodon
Heavy, castle-like Pokémon with high defense.
Queen
Mewtwo
 or Tsareena
The most powerful and versatile piece on the board.
King
Kingambit
 or Slowking
The central figure that must be protected at all costs.

🏆 Competitive Crossover
The two games share surprising strategic similarities. Top Pokémon players often compare competitive VGC (Video Game Championships) to chess because both involve predicting an opponent's "best move" and managing resources. However, Pokémon's "hidden information" (not knowing the opponent's full team/moves) and RNG make it more akin to Poker-Chess than pure Chess.
